Thursday 20^th November 2008 - Cave hunting - Avenc Del Pla Les Basses

The following photos are in chronological order, taken as we walked back after having found the caves.

Park the car on the left hand bend (heading towards the lighthouse) just before kilometer 16 of the MA-2210 between Port de Pollença and the lighthouse (Faro) at Cap de Formentor.

There is a signpost "Cami vel del Far" and a notice warning about big game hunting.

There are two ways to get to the caves:

The easy way.
Walk past the km16 post to a right hand bend. Just beyond the apex of the bend there is a faint track with a row of stones on its right hand side heading down a valley. If you miss this, a bit further on there are a couple of concrete posts and you can drop down from the road to the track.
Walk east of south along the track for about 600m until you are almost at the top of a steep drop down to the sea. At this point head south of west for a flat area of bare earth with a rectangular fenced enclosure. There is a large solitary tree at its south corner about 300m from the right turn.
The more direct way
Head east of south from the car along the ridge, then drop down the end. There are several cairns here, but rough clints and many fallen trees along the ridge make this much harder work.

The main cave is under the big tree at 39°56'49.1"N, 3°12'01.3"E.

Other caves are at 39°56'50.8"N, 3°12'03.1"E and 39°56'49.9"N, 3°12'04.2"E.
